So what does Hard Knocks have to do with church? A lot, I think, in that if I were writing this book in 2008, Mark Driscoll would be the unquestioned Heavyweight Champion of young reformed-dom, with his multiple-book deals, conference-circuit invites, and sprawling franchise of hipster megachurches. We would be talking about what a talented young visionary he is, and we would be right. At the same time, if this were 2008, I might write breathlessly about Tullian Tchividjian and how he’s somehow related to Billy Graham, how he took over this huge megachurch in Florida and made it relevant and gospel centered, and how he, too, is a rising star on the evangelical pastoring/writing/conferencing scene, doing so with panache, great cheekbones, a just-compelling-enough backstory, and also perfect blond surfer hair.

But since it’s 2016, I have to write about the fact that shortly after Driscoll peaked, he was scandalized in various ways, including but not limited to allegations of plagiarism, allegations of buying his way onto the New York Times bestseller list, and also just generally being labeled a misogynistic jerk and a bully. Rachel Held Evans seemed to make it her life goal to see Driscoll publicly castigated, and largely, she was successful. He has lost not only his church but also his entire franchise of churches and is now starting from scratch in Arizona. He has endured a brand of public humiliation to which few can relate. It makes me truly sad.

Tchividjian recently stepped down from his pastorate after admitting to an extramarital affair and was similarly castigated. He wrote the following, on his Facebook page:
